Hello all.
Today I did receive my E-Coder2 device.
All looks good, but no install guide.
I accept, it should not require an install guide, just plug and play. Yes?
On plugging it in to a USB socket, it did not show any life. No lights or USB install sound.
I did see it appear in Windows 10, Device Manager as a Human Interface Device.
When running the radio software, Expert SDR2 SunSDR2DX, which has Version 1.3.1 Update 9 installed, it does not show up in the Options/Panel, only E-Coder 1 is shown here.
Do I need to install a later version firmware for my SDR2DX or later version for ExpertSDR2 software?
I am NOT interested in using ExpertSDR3 software yet, until it reached Beta version or maybe later.
So any help on getting it working would be appreciated.
Thank you, from Ron. vk3io.

In the ExpertSDR version 2 you have under Options=>Panel=> Device tab => E-coder2 setup.
There you can assign functions to knobs and buttons. In order to activate the E-coder click on "Enable".
Key led and Encoder led will light it up.
In order to use the E-coder, Enable must be on.

Here is a link to the E-coder description:

Hello all and thank you for your kind attempts to help me.

Firstly, no one thinks it is possible or nice to receive a device as "Dead on Arrival", but maybe so.

Yes I know where to find E-Coder set up when using the Radio software application.

I have used this software for more than one year, without much difficulty.

Yes I expect it is as simple as:

1. Plug into USB, YES

YES I have tried various USB sockets.

2. Enable E-Coder, YES

but

3. Use, sorry NO.

No "Play" here ( Plug & Pay)!

So I go looking for other possible reasons and I cannot find any.

Then I ask for help, from those who YES find it so simple, which it should be and I expect it to be.

When buying a USB "Human Interface Device", for a good design, I expect some initialization action, when first plugging it in, like all LED lights lite up for a short moment to let the user know all lights are in good working order, but this does not happen with my device.

When plugging in this E-Coder2 device and selecting enable, I expect that at least the VFO knob will control the radio VFO A frequency, without any need to program any switches or LED functions.

Any further assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you, from Ron. vk3io.

Recommendations:
1. Make a screenshot of your Ecoder settings from ESDR and post here. Alternatively record the video.
2. Try on another Win machine
3. Redirect the complaints about your "expectations", "design recommendations" to EE technical support.
4. Keep it simple. Epistolary artist competition is not annouced yet.

FYI. DOE device is usually not seen in Win DM.

Hello Ron.
USB-port should provide 5V, current not less than 0,5А.
Otherwise, you might have issues with the audio—cracks, improper supply of the mic.

Please try to use the panel with some other PC.

Hello all and again thank you all your suggestions.

Yes I have read the requirement for a USB 5V power supply that can deliver 0.5A, as without this you could get audio quality issues, such as crackle or pops in the audio.

But I think those of you are trying to help me are just not comprehending what my situation was and that is "I am NOT able to get the E-Coder2 device to work", that is nothing happens, no response at all, on my SDR2 1.3.1 Update 9 software, when I select Enable.

But I have found the simple answer, which is simply NOT stipulated on any E-Coder2 product information site I have found.

The answer is, I simply had to update my SDR2 software to SDR2 1.3.1 Update 11 (or maybe Update 10 would do) and when I did this, I now simply go to Options/Panel and then select the Device and here in the device menu is now the new device, the E-Coder2. Before updating the software there was only Device E-Coder available.

While trying to solve my problem, I also decided to purchase a 4 Port USB3.0 Powered HUB and this for sure can deliver 5V at 0.5A per port, as my not so new computer only has USB2.0 ports, which I think can only deliver 100mA per port.

I understand that for the E-Coder2 to work at it's full capacity, it is not a data speed issue, but a current supply issue.

So in conclusion SDR2 1.3.1 Update 9 knows nothing about the new product E-Coder2 and if you have E-Coder2, you need SDR2 1.3.1 Update11 software.

Thank you, from Ron. vk3io.

Yeah, sounds like "Manual now to find the manual" is really missing.

Next time you can spare your time by reading release notes.
