TOPIC: SunSDR2 DX Pactor modem connection

SunSDR2 DX Pactor modem connection 27 Sep 2020 21:55 #1

Hi

does someone have experience with SunSDR2 DX connected to a Pactor modem?
Is it possible and how does the connection looks like?

Thanks Dirk

I have been trying for hours and hours with a colleague who has experience with the pactor protocol, the SunSdr2 DX we couldn't get it to work. the latency times of this radio are not compatible with the patcor protocol of scs. Even eesdr are not able to give me advice and make sure that SunSDR2 DX can work in Pactor mode. Unfortunately it is a fault of the Radio Software ... I have taken my FT857 which in a patcor way works very well. Too bad for the SunSDR2 DX ...

Modem Connection is not a problem, the problem is the Radio......

This is quite bad for a high cost Transceiver that it cannot be used with a Pactor modem.
This looks like a modem connection is not possible at all.
Nevertheless, I have some questions:

1. How do you have done the connection? Using headphone and MIC connection on the receiver?
2. Do you have a suspicion what the Problem is? TX-RX latency or any digital filtering destroying the analog signal etc.
3. Is eesdr interested to look into this issue further to maybe fix it in future or is there no interest from the manufacture?

Dear OMs!

I think that with correct combination of VAC, VAC repeater and virtual COM port pairs all is possible.
You dont need any phisical connection to radio. Modem can be connected to PC sound card. But you have to use VAC (VAC repeater) to send modulation data to SUNSDR2DX.
Radio is not a problem.
You didnt try enough. I dont have high cost PACTOR :D :D modem to try it by myself, but all digital modes are working and I dont see the reason why PACTOR mode even with external modem is any diferent.
The easiest way is to blame EE company (which by the way is doing excelent job) and SUNSDR2DX HW.

Hi
it would be nice if everything is possible  . I guess you cannot guarantee that it will working until you have tested it. Speculations will not help. As you said it costs high amount to buy a DX and a Pactor modem. And before spending some thousands bucks you want to know if it will work or at least if the manufacture is interested to take a look and helping to identify the issue.
No one was blamed here it was a simple question and it would be bad if it cannot be get running due to some constraints which cannot be identified/fixed.
I expect that SDR transceiver will have a higher amount of latency due to much more signal processing and even more if you use a soundcard of a notebook + Windows. And a soundcards inside a notebook are not of high quality due to noise and cheap components. So maybe a better and faster connection would be the direct connection to the transceiver. Digital modes using SW on the PC may work because they are designed to compensate delays but an external modem maybe different since it may expect a fast and reliable TX/RX timing.
I hope mir can share more details of his experience.

Dear Rooby!

I really hope that you will find what you are looking for!
I dont see any reason for any guarantee. The most exciting thing in ham radio is trying new things....
It would be nice and polite if you introduce yourself with your hamradio call sign. Then I will at least imagine with whom I share my opinion...
Till then:

Dear Rooby and Pibo
I have already posted on 27.1.2020 a question about it see link (eesdr.com/en/forum-en/hardware-dx/8235-pactor-with-scs-ptc2-and-sunsdr-dx) unfortunately up to now I have had no advice anywhere. Coeme you can see reading it were many but no answer. A request directly to eesdr this is the answer.
*****We've never tried to connect such modems to our transceivers, in theory if you'll use audio in/out of the transceiver you can use Pactor.
If you'll try to use VAC delay might be too big, but as I said, we've never tested it.

The SunSDR2 DX radio still has it and I am very happy. Too bad that with the Pactor protocol I can not use.

I can still add that I use SunSDR2 DX with the VARA protocol which allows you to connect many mailboxes that use the winlink software and support modem software such as VARA, WINMOR etc .. See example HB9AK link: swiss-artg.ch (OE3XEC, HB9T. ....)
Also SCS, manufacturer of Pactor modems, confirms that, not with everyone, but that with some SDR Radio Pactor also works after having set several parameters ..
Have fun everyone.

Hi, everyone.
We've never tried to connect such modems to our transceivers, in theory, if you'll use audio in/out of the transceiver you can use Pactor.
If you'll try to use VAC delay might be too big, but as I said, we've never tested it.

At the moment we are working on the implementation of the external ATU for SS2DX in the ESDR2 and TRX's firmware.
Also, we are working on something new that we'll disclose a bit later.
Then we'll release Update 7 with several bug fixes and new tuning modes for E-Coder panels.
And then we'll continue the development of ESDR3, which has the highest importance for me personally.

Hi Rome,
thanks for your information.
Maybe you can keep this mind on the further development of SW/firmware to provide a mode with minimum latency in future if possible.

Hi Arturo,
I am trying to figure a way to use my SunSDR2DX with Vara HF. It seems you have accomplished this... Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi Ed unfortunately I have not written instructions how to configure the SunSDR2 DX to use VARA. You can partly read in the "Manual User Addendum for SDR DX" how to configure a "Virtual Audio Cable" and a "Virtual Serial Port Emuletor". You need these two programs to interface the VARA virtual modem with the radio. And if you can't configure everything, write a few lines and I hope that with the Goggle Translator I can help you.
