Hello Mark,

Yes, as Hans Christian says and already does per his message. He is using the MB1 simply as a computer and hence it is seen to the Flex as just another client.

I don't have an MB1
I build my systems and have for years all my clients systems and severs have been built by me, around 450+ of them over the years

Been doing I/T work last 27 years and have my own business:

My Take on this: You can build a really decent system to run the MB1 or 2DX, Flex, Anan etc.: for a decent price and it will be much easier to upgrade it in future:
To be fair I used the same version 9 of passmark as presented earlier in this post: I recently had to pull my AMD Ryzen7 for a customer whom was in great need of it, so I popped in a Ryzen 5 : My Passmark is 5722.6

Here are my components used in the building of this system:
Ryzen 5 3600
GigaByte B450 Aorus Motherboard
Geforce GTX 1050 ti 4GB
Main Drive is a Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500 on an M.2 slot
16GB Dual Channel @ 1596MHz (clock settings (16-18-18-36)
a ATX tower case NTX tempered glass
850 Watt Power supply
Running windows 10 Pro 64 Bit

The MB1 is a great looking piece of Hardware and a fantastic radio, I am not in away disputing that at all!
I am just presenting another route-option and its abilities, had the Ryzen 7 been in place it probably would have broken 6000 or damn close

Hans, Erik,
So if I understand correctly I would need to connect the flexradio Lan or ethernet connector to the MB1 Lan or ethernet connector. But what do I do about internet?
Currently I have a cable from my router connected to the ethernet connector on the MB1 which gives me internet coverage.
Please pardon my ignorance with this but I really don't understand how I can operate another radio using the MB1 computer and also have a connection for internet coverage via my router.

Mark,

You use an Ethernet Switch with as many ports as you need, to this switch you connect your router, MB1, Flex SDR, Flex Amp, Printers and other items that needs to be hardwired to the network. A switch like this does not cost much and they have one in every store that sells computers. The simple ones need no configuration, it’s just plug and play. Think of it as a signal divider for your network. Just google “Ethernet switch” and you will find tons of them.

Install SmartSDR on your MB1 and off you go! I often run both the Flex and MB1 SDR at the same time, but if you do this make sure to not in any circumstance transmit on the same
band. You will for sure kill your front end if you are not careful.

Or if having an ethernet switch is inconvenient, which it is for me, you can send internet from the desktop computer to the MB1 (or MB1 to the Flex) by

1. Internet Connection Sharing
2. Bridging the ethernet port to the WiFi/Internet LAN port in Windows
3. Use an USB WiFi connector plugged in to the MB1 if that is the terminated client as in Greg's configuration and also good for general use assuming there is WiFi. In yours Mark, the Flex is the terminating client so the question will be whether you want internet/LAN ip to the Flex or whether you want a local link. Personally I go for the local link because I do not use the Flex on SmartLink and so it does not need internet normally.

All the above are well described in an internet search and, for the Flex, on the Flex Forum.

I HIGHLY ADVISE NOT GETTING A DAMN SWITCH THAT IS A GREEN POWER MODEL>>> Also get a 1gB switch , it will step down to the 100Meg that the EE rigs use and automatically connect up to the 1GB other items use. Treat your network , Radios and other items like there in a Business environment network configuration- and you'll be better off

Rick,
My MB-1 and Shack PC are connected to the same ethernet switch. The PC is a high-end build with I9 processor, etc.
Opening the EESDR2 software on the PC, the software does not "discover" the MB-1.
What else must I do to run the MB-1 with the shack PC?

Good evening Hans,
I just ordered an TP-Link TL-SG108 | 8 Port Gigabit Unmanaged Ethernet Network Switch, Ethernet Splitter | Plug & Play | Fanless Metal Design | Shielded Ports | Traffic Optimization | Limited Lifetime Protection from Amazon. That should give me enough ports if I wish to do any extensions. Thanks for the suggestion.

Mark,

That switch will probably do just fine for your needs. I can see from online reviews that people are very happy with it. It does have the power saving feature Rick warned you about, but it’s not the end of the world if you need to replace it for some reason later, it’s a quite cheap switch.

Hans, Erik,
I should be receiving my Flexradio on Friday. My questions are about using the MB1's computer to control the Flexradio. It seems that when I turn on my MB1 the VAC automatically loads. The com port program does not. But if I am installing the SSDR software, how do I make sure that VAC is not running? If memory serves me correct I believe that the program automatically starts at login. And I think one can go in and designate what programs to start and which one's not to. Hans, I know that you are operating the Flex along with the MB1. That must be a major challenge. But, then again, I may not understand all of the particulars with the operation.

Mark,

Don't worry if VAC starts, it won't interfere with SSDR, I have VAC and VSPE running all the time. Just install SSDR and enjoy your Flex :D

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread. I am about to upgrade processor and memory on my MB1 with F6 firmware. I am looking at cooling options and would like to know if anyone has retrofitted liquid cooling for the processor in their MB1. It looks to me like this could be done if the cooling lines are led out the side of the case and the radiator and fans are mounted externally.
I am sure I will attract a number of comments why this should not be done, and I welcome those constructive comments.

However, I really would like to hear from anyone who has done this and is willing to admit it.

I completed replacing the stock i5 and 8 gb ram with the i7 7700t at 2.9 GHz and 32gb of Micron ram. Performance went from 1,399 to 2,224 so roughly a 60% increase. I did not replace the SSD since I am doing fine on space. Anecdotally, the system response is much quicker and JTDX does not have the two second lag that it did before the upgrade.

I have a 3.6GHz i7 7700 and may try that out to validate the TPD throttling performance idea.
