I remember reading somewhere that when you configure the SDR to work with HRD you use the same configuration as you would with a Kenwood 590. I have got a cat cable that used to connect my Kenwood 590 to my SPE amplifier. Now because you obviously chose 590 configurations to connect HRD to the SDR, I was wondering whether the same would apply to this cable?

I have still not managed to connect things properly. Tell me one thing, do I need a PTT switch if I'm going to use the amplifier alongside the radio? In other words, I can't just use the MOX on screen buttons to transmit the radio?

The main problem I've got is I can't seem to be able to switch into input 2 on the amplifier. At the moment, I've got my ICOM 7800 connected to the amplifier and that is using input one.

Yes - PTT from radio to amplifier. The cable is part of the bundle you were having made up by ML&S.
I answered this question fully on 4 December.

Erik.

Hi Rob,

It's been well over a year since I even tried the SPE with my Sun SDR. In fact, since I started this thread I've got the new updated DX version. Funny you should bring this matter up again, I was thinking about connecting the SPE to the Sun. I'm really not using my ICOM 7800 anymore and I was seriously thinking about selling it and just using my Sun with the SPE. So, Martin Lynch are making up the leads, are they? I don't think I ever purchased some from them. What are the leads called on their website?

Hi Penn
I read on the post's here i.e. from G0CGL ( The cable is part of the bundle you were having made up by ML&S. ) I thought that YOU might have had them made up ages ago ?? from what I gather from other post's the one you need is on this Link eesdr.com/en/products-en/accessories-en#description
From what it say's if I understand it right it will do the band change and also the TX so if and when I buy a SunSDR2 DX I would also need one of those cables for my Expert 1K.
I'll still use my other get and getting more in to SDR radio's I've got a Flex 3000 here in the UK and a Flex 6300 at my holiday home so was thinking of either getting a Flex 6400 or the SunSDR2 DX just watching video's at the moment looking at what the software and the hardware can do for me, so lot to look at at the moment. If I get any other info on who in the UK makes the leads up I'll post here also just in case more want them.

The leads are made up by ML&S. Just call them and they will quote you the price. Remember there is a choice: a band data cable from the radio to the SPE or a CAT/PTT cable combined from the computer to the SPE. I suppose it does not really matter except that with a CAT/PTT cable a) there is no configuring of the Band Data table in ESDR2 and the amp fully follows the frequency and not just the band. The local Club has the DX and SPE and we simply had ML&S make up the cable, plugged it in and away we went. Mind you, they charge £££s for it :( and much cheaper to make the CAT/PTT cable yourself - its only 2 wires for CAT and a 3rd for PTT.

Like I said before I really don't use my ICOM 7800 much anymore. The PC I am using at the moment is what I class as my office PC, even though I'm not really an office. However, it's the PC that I have on all day and I sit in front of it most of the time. My SDR is plugged into my network switch behind me. I've got the software loaded onto this computer and I use my PC headset microphone. Thankfully, you can plug and RS 232 into the amplifier and run it into the computer which will allow me to operate the amplifier via the PC. I'm grateful for that because if I didn't have that facility I would have to keep turning around to operate the amplifier which would just defeat the object altogether. I just need to get a very long serial to USB cable.

Thanks for the links, I will give Lynch a call and find out exactly what cable I need. I'm assuming that you can use the SDR through the amplifier without it being switched on? This is something I am not quite sure about because I bought the amplifier along with my ICOM 7800 and I also run it through the CT 17 interface which means the radio controls the amplifier. Basically, when you switch on the radio the amplifier switches are not the same time, and then turns off when you switch the radio off. Also, the amplifier follows the ICOM 7800 frequency. This is why I've been a bit reluctant to dedicate the SPE holy to the SDR. When I had my SDR2 Pro I did connect it to the SPE but I just couldn't get it to work properly.

Yes, antenna input 1 is straight through when the amplifier is not powered.

I suppose all I need is the band data cable going from the radio to the amplifier? I'm not using a PTT switch attached to the radio, I'm using Vox on my PC. Thinking about it, if Martin Lynch knocks me up a proper cable then I can probably have the ICOM 7800 plugged in as well as the Sun and they should work properly now.

You still need to switch the amplifier to TX. Consult the user manual but I suspect PTT is a required cable. Anyway, ML&S will tell you for certain and can make the band data / PTT bundle for you if that is what it needs.

I would think that would work Penn I would use mine the same with 2 radio's connected to the Expert Amp, from what I think it say's about the cable it's band changing and PTT also so your IC7800 would work just click the switch to change to either radio.

I emailed Martin Lynch last night regarding a cable to connect the SPE to my Sun and Gary got back to me this morning telling me that he's never been asked for one of these cables.
