Ok what about the qst magazine and having the sunsdr2 in 53 place ?how this measures or test take place ? ,i was told that here somewhere is a discusion for this and can't finf anything .A friend of mine also told that the pro in vhf is deaf vs to rsp1a .Ia anyone know where is this discusion is about the qst magazine and how this tests is taken?.

It is a little deaf on 2 m even vs my 20 $RTLSDR DONGLE but I'm sure it will get updated I love my sunsdr2dx it deserves to be closer to 1

So let me get this straight, I own and love my Collins R-390A vacuum tube receiver from 1967 and I believe it is the finest Analog receiver ever made and it’s #10 on the Sherwood list.
There is no way that the old R-390A has a better receiver than the SDR2! How can you compare a 70+ year old analog tube radio design against a modern digital SDR, It’s not a fair comparison two totally different technologies.

As far I am concerned I would not take the Sherwood list as the only deciding factor in buying a radio as there are many other factors to consider.
I have owned a few of the radios on the list such as the Flex 6700,6600M even the old Ten-Tec Orion II all of witch is closer to the top of the list. All I can say is My Expert Electronics MB1 far exceeds the performance of any of the prior radios I have owned in all aspects. And certainly has more features than my old Collins R-390A.

Some people are just afraid of technology

Two questions: 1. who is qst magazine? and 2.Why should I even think if I care?

I have several VHF radios including an ICOM 9700. My SunPro2 is so much more sensitive than the 9700. The 9700 is basically unusable with the pre-amp off but even when turned on it doesn't come close to the sensitivity of the SunPro2. In fact, the SunPro2 out performs all the other VHF radios in the shack. (and most of the HF ones as well)

Have you enabled the VHF LNA on the ExpertSDR software?

Also check that the antenna is set to Antenna A. I recall that both v2 and v3 versions of the ExpertSDR software sometimes defaulted VHF to use the ADC.

Sherwood couldn't setup a computer system to properly run a real SDR, if it can't attach to an etch-a sketch then game over for him

QST mag is nothing but a shame at paid advertising, just like the freaking ARRL what a Joke!

Well, I can't comment on the Pro model but here is my real world experience of my SunSDR2DX:

On VHF it is far from deaf! Like Tom, I also have a 9700, which was my prime 2m radio...notice the past tense ;-)
My main interest is meteor scatter and EME on 2m. Not only does my SunSDR2DX outperform the 9700 in RF terms, the ability to see EME returns on the waterfall makes it so much more useful. I use a good masthead LNA, and I drive a SSPA to 500w with ease. To my mind, the SunSDR2DX is a real hidden gem on 2m.

I have always respected the tests performed by Rob Sherwood. Plus, have enjoyed his talks to local radio groups about how he approaches the testing and measurement of old and new radios. In the Q&A last year I did ask if he had tested the EE radios but he said hadn't had the opportunity to date.

I could be wrong, but I think you'll find the ARRL magazine QST, tested a SunSDR at least 5 or 6 years ago. There was a minimal instruction manual at the time and they failed to get it working properly. I don't think Mr Sherwood has accessed a Sun SDR to test using his own methodology. I have asked Roman to get ARRL and/or Sherwood to test their radios again but he has not been successful for some reason.
I believe Sherwood borrows radios for test from other amateurs rather than accepting one from the makers, perhaps a good idea?
Having owned a Flex 6500, a K3S, an MB1 and a SunSDR2Pro I have my own opinions on EE's products.
The only one I have left and use, is the SunSDR2Pro. Draw your own conclusions guys.

Here is the problem I have with these tests.

The computer is going to make a BIG DIFFERENCE, especially in the way the software is configured for that radio.
Also, the speed of the computer and how it is connected to the radio again is going to make a difference!
The Rig being directly connected or passing through a router and the type of NIC card can make a difference!

As well as firewall settings and which version of a said Operating system is in use as well, whatever flavor of MAC, Windows or Linux all the above is going to make a difference in overall user experience.

It is not going to be a true equal test from one user to the next
unless the hardware is the same and the settings are exactly the same.

Filter Taps for one are going to make a big difference in performance when he runs a RX test.
As is AGC gain and to some extent as well as the sample rate being used in the test.
Now let's also toss in the different values of DSP filtering that can be done.

And I can't tell you how many times I come across a user who Doesn't turn on the Bandpass filters esp. on the 2DX, they leave it in auto or worse have the damn Wideband RX filer enabled, which can cause havoc on stronger signals!
Also let's not forget the RX bandwidth as well that will again play a huge role in the outcome of test! esp. in terms of signal to noise!

To sum it up it will never be a level playing field!
and that is why you won't see true computer driven SDR radios on the test!

And it also explains why in the QST test the radio is lower than most of you guys expect, because it is not setup to its best abilities period!
