Good Afternoon

On a conventional radio the recommended compression to use is around 5 to 10 dB. Is there a way to work out the equivilent on the SunSDR?

Any help would be much appreciated.

It's really about how you want to sound.

Put the Monitor on, adjust the level and then set the compressor.

Typically I run 6 or 8:1 ratio and you adjust the threshold for the results you want...by ear.

Suggest you use the recorder to record your audio..
Play back then adjust to your liking.

I have a shelf full, dynamics, condensers, many.

My current favorite is an Earthworks Ethos but I also happen to really like my Shure SM-57 as well.

The mics have subtle differences in character but they are less important than knowing how to apply EQ and processing. That takes time and patience to learn.
