TOPIC: Current I drops down when in remote operation

Current I drops down when in remote operation 09 Jan 2020 19:14 #1

Hi everyone
I owned a SunSdrDX and want it to control remotely. I set up OpenVPN on a Raspberry PI and the connection works perfect. I also installed Virtual Audio Cable (VAC) and the serial COM Port generator VSPE as described in the addendum downloadable file.

Running the system paralell with N1MM logger and WSJT-X for the digital mode is no problem. They only problem I have is that the output current i.e the output power is not constant. Most of the time, the output power drops down to 0 Watt out also when it starts with 100 W output. It is also the same when I just use the "tune" bottom of the EESDR software 1.3.1. Somethimes, the power level keeps the same but most of the time, the output power drops down to 0 Watt after some seconds....

Any ideas how I can fix the problem?

Thanks a lot guys for your help and Vy 73 de Daniel, HB9TOC

Hi,
i dont use the digital only ssb and cw so I cannot say much about it.
How about SSB performance?
Are you using the latest version of the software (the update 4)?
Is the AGC turned On?
Is the RMS enabled for the meter?

Hi Pawel

Thanks a lot for the fast reply.

I use the last version of the software. AGC is on and the RMS-Indicator is also on. I am still trying to get the PC-mic work in SSB (it looks like there is another problem with the USB-mic here also I don't get any power output but constantly Also when I use the SDR not remotely. But this is another topic).

When I use the "tune" bottom in USB or CW, the same happens that the current drops down at some point and I have no output power (it does not happen when I have the SDR direct connected i.e. in the same LAN). In USB and tune mode or for FT8, the TX mic-meter shows perfect 0db, also the I have no output power. The voltage drops from 13.8 Volt to about 12.7 Volt when I TX.

Any suggestions?

Hi Daniel,
The voltage level drop is a bit high but no critical.
You can turn off RMS display as this will always show low power.
What about SWR?
If the SWR is high radio will automatically adjust the power level to a safe level.
The power slider will move itself down.

As Eric has mentioned, Roman will be better to help here.

Daniel,

Can I get more info how you setup Raspberry Pi or some useful link?

Hi everybody

Thanks very much for your replys.

I had time this weekend to go a bit further. When I am connected with the SunSDR in the same network everything works good. Then I try to use it remotely over OpenVPN the output power goes down. I looked to the ethernet traffic. Then I send in SSB or other modes, the up- and download of the network adapter is 4 Mbps. When the output power drops down, the up- and download spped goes also down to 2 Mps. So it seems like it is something with the OpenVPN connection or somithing with the network. Now I have to figure it out why this happens.

I have no increasing SWR with reduces the drive power level while the current out the power drops down.

I have installed OpenVPN on a raspberry pi 4 with debian as described by IW7DMH (on this homepage). It works in the brigde mode that I see the SDR and that my PC is in the same network. I have to check the CPU capacity of the raspberry while I an sending...

When the SDR is in RX, it uses about 12 Mbps dowload and 6 Mbps upload speed and it works without "blackouts". A speed test shows that I have an ouload speed of about 12 Mbps when I am in brigding mode, So this should be sufficient.

Any ideas how to check anything and find the problem?

You have to big ping time between remote radio a local computer. Ping must be less about 10 ms. When Ping is more than 10 ms transfer is bigger than work normally and no power on tx mode.

Thanks for the input. My ping from the remote side to the openvpn server is 13-15 ms. 10ms is incredible low... I madr the common things to reduce the ping on the remote side (change to googme dns, registry, no automatic updates etc). I look to change now the lan cables to isolated ones and the router on the server side. I saw that i have no problems on vhf so perhaps i have some interferences on the server side.

Any further ideas to reduce the ping?

Where can I get the information to be able to put the sunsdr2 DX remotely, using the Raspberry Pi and the OpenVPN?

After many attempts to work remotely via an LTE modem where ping for the remote station was 50 ms. I set up a server on a remote station where eesdr software works. connects to the server via a remote desktop and transmits sound through teamspeak or mumble applications. This type of connection is stable even with high ping jumps. Somehow the audio is high because mumble and teamspeek use the opus codec.
I have been working in this system for over a year and a half without any problems.

Danierl,

Is that mean that you receive audio signal through remote desktop but for tx audio some of mumble and teamspeek software?

Transmit and receive audio is done via mumble.

Hi all,
There are other Softwares too.
https://www.vb-audio.com/Voicemeeter/vban.htm
I have downloaded it while ago but did not have time to test it.
And I still did not get my VPN.
But soon as I get some progress I will share the info.
