TOPIC: CW Monitoring Delay?

CW Monitoring Delay? 30 Jul 2021 12:19 #1

Is the 5-6ms monitoring delay between keying and hearing the side tone? If not, what is it?

Is there anyone who can send an audio file so my brain can process what the delay will sound like?

It is on certain conditions, which are:
1. You have keyer either plugged into SunSDR or E-Coder, and
2. You are monitoring via headphones directly plugged into SunSDR (under ESDR2)

Actually, there is much better monitoring performance in ESDR3. The delay while monitoring via headphones plugged into computer almost gone. However there two things:
1. ESDR3 is still in Alpha
2. When monitoring via computer, the delay will be directly dependent on the OS and computer model/capabilities.

Definitely would not advise you to make a judgement based on someone's audio/video. Because of HW and conditions would certainly be different from what you have.

If you want real thing - get you PC to the friend, who has SunSDR or to nearest dealer.
Otherwise, there are heaps of videos on youtube. Have a look, for example, what Enzo have recorded earlier days:
In this one he is - clearly - monitoring via PC, but even knowing that it really hard to make any judgement.

Hi,
I just want to highlight in that video I had to install the ASIO4ALL driver to reduce latency at the minimum. Using standard driver latency was unacceptable.
Anyway I would waith for the new E-coder2 device that will provide its internal audio card. In this way the audio caming from the computer will not be affected by driver misconfig nor by computer performance.
For what I know (and have understood) E-Coder2 is OS & Driver agnostic so it should work as configured at the factory without any other issue.

I am testing E-coder 2 for already couple weeks with latest ESDR2 and ESDR3 alpha.

I have used it under Win10 x64 and macOS 10.15.7 (both OS - native drivers) with monitoring via headphones plugged into SunSDR, then with same headphones plugged into respective PC and then - monitoring via respective PC sound card (playing via PC's in-build speakers).

On my experience, there is definitely no noticeable delay under ESDR3.
Though, I can "ear detect" some difference in delay under ESDR2 upd 8 and 9, specifically when using speakers.

There is also no ("my ear detectable") difference when keyer is plugged into SunSDR or E-coder 2.

Unfortunately, I do not have any reasonable good equipment at home to measure audio stream in ms, and the pro audio studio (which I have used for the purpose last year) did not survive covid's lockdowns :(

However, whatever Qt did in version 6 with OS-agnostic audio and video - this definitely works :so_happy:
