Hi folks,

I’ve owned my SunSDR2 DX for around a year now and I’m totally satisfied with it. Currently I’m using ExpertSDR2 v1.3.1 Update 8 without any issues.
On VHF my Sun is driving my Beko HLV-1000 without any trouble.
To have some more “juice” on HF I’ve ordered a SPE Expert 1.3k-FA second series. I’ve read a lot regarding the SunSDR2 and the SPE amplifiers. Lots of ham’s reported that they’ve grilled there LDMOS and I wonder how they’ve done it :unknown:
Is there a safe way to use the 1.3k with the SunSDR2 DX without the risk of killing the LDMOS?
I’ve understand, that the power level correction is a good way to drive the amp. Is the TX spike really a big issue regarding LDMOS failure?

Many thanks in advance, stay safe and healthy
Phil, dG3ek

The question is also relevant for the Pro:
I am using the Pro and the DX to my SPE Expert 1.3K-FA amp and it works fine.
Good things to do:
- My amp is EU version and only needs 3-8 W driving power for LOW/MID/HIGH power settings in the amp.
- When using a logging software in CW to generate preprogrammed messages in CW, set the PTT delay in the logging program. The PTT/TX delay in ExpertSDR2 does not function for CW. See Device=>TX settings. My log delay is 50 ms. The Breakin delay is 200 ms that is good for my CW at 24-30 wpm.
- Never trust ALC between the radio and the amp to control driving power. Latensy of a few milliseconds in the LAN/software can be a problem. I am carefully setting the driving power manually before starting a CW session. In ExpertSDR2 and it is preset per band.
- Carefully tune the amplifier tuner as per SPE manual. About 100 tuning points to do manually covering all bands.

These points are relevant for any SDR radio.

I just set up a DX with a 1.5k SPE yesterday for a friend (new ham worried about blowing up the amp). I used the power correction table to prevent overdriving the amp. Go here: options/device/expert. The software does remember power by band and mode (if the option is checked) but this table provides a level of safety on top of that which I consider essential when using SPE, especially since SPE will resist/deny warranty replacement of the expensive LDMOS device (not to mention the repair turnaround time in EU - better in USA). This table is really an excellent feature and should be setup with just about every amp.

Hi,

thanks for the advices. I’ve set up the Power correction tables and it’s works fine.
I’ll also check my TX delays and adjust them.
So I’ve understand, that the tx-delay is essential regarding spikes? How to you solve the CW issue regarding disabled tx-delays?

Walt, i own the SPE 1.5 latest series. I found the amp cable from GIgaparts. Of course no data. Would you steer me in the right direction as far as what to select for Radio in the CAT menu of the SPE and anything other relevant info to avoid blowing my LDMOS(s) in the amp? Tnx in advance..Dario
