I've connected a straight key to the key jack using a mono plug to practice sending code while learning morse code. I get tone when I key down, but there is quite a lag from key down to hearing the tone in my speaker. So much so that I can only send code very slowly and deliberately, about 4 to 6 seconds to send the letter "Q'. I've turned break-in off, tried disabling VAC and looked for other other settings that I might be missing. Touch key paddles seem to work ok, and I can increase and decrease the WPM through the slider, but the class i'm taking prefers I learn starting with a straight key.

Any ideas on what might be causing the lag with the straight key?

I'm using version 1.31 Update 8.

Thanks,

One idea. Even though you are using a straight key with 2 wires you still need to use a stereo plug. By using a mono plug you will be shorting the ring and the sleeve. The correct wiring for a straight key using a stereo plug is tip & sleeve. No connection to the ring.

From the manual.

"Straight Key should be connected to the KEY socket using the stereo 6.3 mm Jack, with
disconnected ring contact. Pressing the key turns the transceiver to the TX mode and it
generates a continuous CW signal (manual mode).
Releasing the straight key returns the transceiver to the RX mod"

Also check the key set-up which is available using the BreakIn dropdown. Top left. ExpertSDR v2 Software.

Suggest you use the Headphone output on the front for your audio source.. unfortunately using cw this is the only way to hear the sidetone without latency causing a problem.
I have already expressed the question as to why no line out put for powered speakers taken of from this audio source

Thanks Tom and Smiffy333

Implementing both suggestions worked. i changed to a stereo plug, wired as suggested. Monitoring out of the headphone jack as well.
