I received my Pro yesterday and have been listening a lot! Love the receiver! But when I first transmitted, I was only putting out about 3-4 watts. After several hours of checking ALL the gain settings, AGC, etc. I have it up to about 6 watts RMS on the output.... I did have a QSO from NC to NY on 4 watts which was fun, but I know the radio can do much more. When I tune, it goes all the way to 18-20 watts depending on my battery voltage and my SWR is around 1.2-1.3 into an End Fedz 20m dipole hanging in a tree. Im using an MH-31 microphone on setting #2 and my signal into the signal analyzer, both pre and post modulation, seem just fine. I can push the gain in the PROC EQ settings to +10 dB and my signal clips.... so I am at +8 dB. I record my voice and listen to it, sounds great. Everything works great, I just can't seem to get past 6 watts output. I have my AGC set to +6dB too...
I did put in a support ticket, I'm sure I will hear back soon. Just wanted to post to see if anyone knew of any hidden settings... Since it tunes at full power, I am assuming it WILL transmit at full power. I just cant seem to figure out how...
Im still stick on low power... Roman responded to my support email and told me my input voltage needed to be 15v, not the 13.1 my battery was providing. So I purchased the Mean Well 15v 6a power supply and am now using it. Radio stays at 15v, even when transmitting with the Drive slider all the way up (amp draw is only about 1.4-2.0 amps while transmitting). My analyzed mic signal looks and sounds good. I keep making contacts but they are all on 1 to 4 watts.... which is awesome! I would just love to see the full power out of this impressive little radio.
Erik, I just tried turning my AGC off, and while it got me around 10 watts out, the audio was clipping and distorted. Everytime I make a change, I watch my audio in the signal analyzer to see what happening, usually all my attempts at getting more power result in a clipped or distorted signal. Keeping my audio signal clean and clear only nets me about 5 watts at best... When I took the mic off my headset and put it right up to my lips, I hit 10 watts with AGC on and my signal was somewhat clear, but I was eating the mic.... keeping it 1/2" to 3/4" from the corner of my mouth provides the clearest signal, but im back at 5 watts..
I can tune at 20 watts, so I know the radio can output 20... strange issue it seems....
The MH-31 is a notoriously bad microphone, lacking in talk power. I have one and it is quite awful. Turning MIC AGC off and having a lot of compression gave me much more power out, without the distortion that you have, but the audio quality was still not good. Not that I have done this mod but a common upgrade for it is to convert to an electret insert, achievable due to there being an unused 5v supply. Simpler of course is to change microphones.
So I started with the MH-31 (I even did the resistor/cap mod) and it sounds better than it did, but I just moved to the ModMic. Much better sound on the ModMic! I also get a little more power from the ModMic than I did the MH-31... But im still short of full power... by about half. It really does seem like this problem is directly related to my mic and its output. Just switching mics has made a difference. I will try playing with the compressor some more.
Yes Chris, I use the ModMic 4 (now replaced by AntLion with the Mod Mic Uni) and it is superb. If you cannot achieve nearer to full power and excellent quality audio with it then I would begin to suspect the radio. I do have MIC AGC off and COMP at 4.4:1 with Threshold at -27dB.

So Erik, I tried your settings (no AGC and the comp settings you gave) and it actually sounds very good! BUT, my signal analyzer is just blown off the scale when I key the mic. The recorded voice file sounds really good though. AND, I am putting out more power too! I changed my meter from RMS to Peak and I see to hit the 20 Watt mark a few times. RMS is obviously much lower, in the 7-11 watt range. I feel like I am making progress. I do have a support "Skype" call tomorrow morning with EE.
Thanks for the settings, I am hopeful that on tomorrow's call I will be able to get her dialed in!
