At the station location, SunSDR2DX works perfectly using local PC (win7x64) with ExpertSDR2 latest update (11). I have finally got an internet connection with sufficient BW (12M symmetrical). I have setup a VPN bridge using SoftEther VPN with the server running at my home and the site to site client bridge running on a dedicated win 10 PC at the station.
The two LANs are connected via a virtual layer 3 switch (part of SoftEther VPN). I am able to run my K3s with remoterig and all my other networked stuff (switches and amp) just fine.

I'm having two issues at my home location PC (win7x64) with SDR2 and i'm pretty sure they are not related:

1) ExpertSDR2 does not see any of the audio devices or VAC's. This was working with update 7 I had on the PC and used it when the SDR2DX was also at home. Since I had already updated the firmware on the SDR2DX, I updated to update 11 so as to keep everything in sych. I have uninstalled and installed twice now and no change in this behavior.

2) ExpertSDR2 'discovers' the SunSDR2DX easily and can read the 'info'. But when I attempt to start the radio, The big red X comes up with "Can't start SunSDR2DX!" message. I also have a Ubuntu 20 machine (I use for applications development) and tried the linux version. It also 'sees' the SunSDRDX and info but likewise can't start.

I have turned off both my firewall and anti-virus just to be sure and they are not causing these problems. The ping time is averaging about 60ms so I don't think that is an issue.

Any help I can get to resolve these two issues would be appreciated.

Neal, K4EA

I missed this post.

A question, have you done a full tear down?

e.g. Grabbed a bit of ethernet cable and connected the home PC (win7x64), whilst at the remote site, to the internet facing connection? Pass/Fail?

Then move up to the internal connection? Pass/Fail?

What ports (tcp/udp) have been enabled end to end?

Have you raised a support ticket for this issue with EE?

You have posted your question in the forum which is a very different place.

Tom.

Thanks Tom!

In reverse order:

I thought this was the forum!

I don't believe either of my issues are with the radio so I did not enter a support ticket.

It's connected by a site-to-site VPN. All the ports are open for all traffic.

I have two win 7 PC's at my remote site. The main operating position and the radio are on the same switch and the other pc is about 75M away over a wifi link. Both those pc's work with the radio just fine. When I had the radio at home it worked just fine with my home pc. I don't see how taking my home pc to the remote site will help the issue other than to determine if it is something that has changed on the pc, but it is possible. Rather than take the pc to the remote site (which would be a major PIA), I could bring the radio here as I'm going to the remote site this weekend (CQ160 contest!). In fact, that is what I had planned to do if I could not get it working by now.

Neal, IMHO (as many others) you have overestimating the forum capabilities :sorry:

Yes, the forum may help, but it requires primarily you to do the job, starting from reading the manuals, recommendations and perform troubleshooting.

In addition to what Tom have said, I can point you to system minimal requirements. Perhaps you were right to not opening the support ticket ... because compliance with minimal requirements would be the first thing support will ask you to do. Yeah-yeah, I know that it can work with Win7... either in less complex networking scenarios or your own network analysis capabilities.

Let me give you a clue: when you are saying "it's connected by a site-to-site VPN. All the ports are open for all traffic", do you mean you "believe", or you have a solid proof (aka wireshark logs) confirming that traffic (on all involved interconnecting points) over UDP ports 50000, 50001, 50002, 40000, 40001,40002, 40003, 40004 is routed and encapsulated/deencapsulated into site-to-site VPN correctly? (Also tell me that your are not using Win7-based site-to-site VPN...)

And IMHO following classic OSI model troubleshooting steps may help too. Starting with complete and detailed network diagram.

IMHO by the moment you have network diagram ready/analysed and traffic captured/analysed, you won't need forum help, because you will find it yourself 8-)

P.S. And please note that this is end-user forum. Where regular users are. Official tech support can be found via top menu of this page (fourth from top menu left) under Support-Technical Support.

P.S.S Last (at this stage, but not the least) thing Re: your 12Mb symmetrical connection:

ssd2bandwidth.png

Please note that this was measured with SS2 over 5 years ago, however still can be taken as valid.

I would make sure that the radio is connected on a LAN directly first and progress from there.

VPNs introduce a number of other considerations. I'm not sure what your site-to-site VPN looks like but I would look for your IP being in the same subnet as the radio for starters. Depending on how the VPN is configured (TAP or TUN) it might or might not be forwarding all the necessary data packets correctly. The configuration of the VPN really depends so much on how your system is set up. On top of that, there's also the question of latency. Above a certain latency, EESDR will not maintain a connection with the radio.

The detection of the radio is dependent on UDP broadcast messages. If your VPN setup does not forward that, you will not see the radio either. You might want to consider starting with EESDR2 which allows you to specify the radio's IP directly without relying on the discovery function. This can sometimes get things going.

Thanks all for your assistance.

I have heard back from Roman. the issue is the latency. My ping times are about 60 ms. Roman has told me this needs to be under 5ms. I have now setup the remote server and client and can successfully connect to the radio. The sound device issue still remains. The remote client will not see my sound devices either. I'm at a loss on this as all my other applications see them just fine (e.g. JTDX including all VACs).

A little program called "Sonobus" works really well with low latency over all networking connections. This is for sound only but can be directed to any source or sink of audio on each or many machines.
