This is only my second day with my new SunSDR2 DX radio. I’m running ExpertSDR2 v1.3.1 Update 7 on Windows 10 and yesterday everything seemed to work pretty well, with only a few minor exceptions.

However, today when I started the program, it displayed 3 grey, non-responsive windows and reported that the program was not responding. This error occurs anytime I try to start the application.

However, I was able to get it to run again by deleting (actually renaming) my ‘ExpertSDR2’ settings directory. The /Users/{name}/AppData/Local/Expert Electronics/ExpertSDR2 file. ... But, of course, I lost my settings.

I have the original (broken) directory if it's useful for diagnostics.

At the moment we are working on ESDR3 and ESDR2 Update 8 with the new firmware, it should be released next week.
It might be the last release of the ESDR2 this year.

Things were a little different today. Everything worked okay until I tried to open the band scope. Then, the program hung up and stopped responding.
Once again, renaming my ‘ExpertSDR2’ settings directory restored normal operation - with a loss of settings.

I'm wondering if the fact I'm running multiple (x3) monitors is the trigger for some of this strange behaviour.

This sound very much like a issue with your antivirus or firewall

can you add the EESDR directory to your antivirus EXCEPTION rules/list also please add the EESDR directory to your firewall rules as well.

Thanks Rick! Adding anti-virus exceptions didn’t help. I use ESET Internet Security and it’s usually pretty nonintrusive.

I started taking fairly frequent backups of the ‘ExpertSDR2’ directory and eventually hit a case where the differences between a working backup and a failed directory were pretty minor. (I’ve attached a screen shot of a comparison of the two directories done with UltraCompare). The only differences in the two directories are in the options.ini and options.ini.back files.

As a test, I decided to run with the broken ExpertSDR2 directory and edit the options.ini file until I got it working. The first line I tried fixed it. I copied the MainWindow\geometry entry (one line) from a good version of the options.ini file to the broken file and it restored normal operation.

Roman, I can post the good and bad versions of the MainWindow\geometry lines if it’s useful.

One other thing I can think of that could cause this is possible RF into computer?

corrupting the INI file- could you try placing a grounding wire between the rig and possible loosen a screw on the computer (preferably none of the power supply mounting screws) and use flat wire or grounding braid if you have available.

When I ran an older 3000 flex I had intermittent issues at times with the database corrupting grounding both rig and computer helped, Now if you using laptop I can only suggest both power supply for rig and the laptop or both plugged into same outlet or power strip and grounding the rig.

We can definitively rule that out ... I haven’t transmitted with the new radio yet. ☺︎

I believe it’s a bug in the code used to save the window state in a multi monitor setup. I have 3 monitors: two 27” and one 24”. The two 27” monitors have one screen resolution and the 24” monitor has a different lower resolution.

The missing attachment from the previous post

Running two different screens here one a 2560x1444 in 4K and the other a 1980x1080 standard res, but you make an easy test disable one or two monitors and try it and see , What video card are you running? Also wonder if you have tried giving ADMIN rights to the EESDR program and checking what happens, just a few thoughts

The computer is an Alienware Aurora A11 with a GTX 1660 Ti 6GB graphic card. The two 27” monitors are Dell U2711 Ultra-Precision monitors running 2560 x 1440 resolution with a 59.950Hz refresh rate. The 24” monitor is an HP L2445m monitor running 1950 x 1200 resolution with a 59.950Hz refresh rate.

Before I came up with a relatively easy way to edit/restore a broken options.ini file it was a pain losing all of my settings every time it broke! Now, with this recovery method in place, I should be able to be a bit more adventurous in my testing. I’ll try to run a few test cases to see what I can come up with.

Yes, I’m running EESDR with admin rights. I did this to try to resolve other issues I’m having getting Log4OM to interface with EESDR.

I sure hope ESDR2 Update 8 and the new firmware resolves this issue. I'm only in my second week with this new radio and I'm beginning to question my decision to purchase a SunSDR2 DX.

I was unable to run the test cases the way I hoped because the program failed immediately and I couldn't recover the options.ini file. So I started over. I deleted the ExpertSDR2 directory and started fresh. Again, my first test case failed. As did every other test case that involved a second monitor.

Test Case 1 – FAIL!
RX1 and RX2 in separate windows. Not full-screen. Each on a separate 27” monitor.

Test Case 2 – FAIL!
RX1 and RX2 in separate windows. Each full-screen and on a separate 27” monitor.

Test Case 3 - PASS
Only 1 RX window. Bandscope part of main ExpertSDR2 window

Test Case 4 – FAIL!
Only 1 RX window. Bandscope on second 27” monitor.

Test Case 5 - PASS
RX1 and RX2 in separate windows on main 27” screen.

Test Case 6 - PASS
RX1, RX2 and BS in separate windows, all on main 27” screen.

Other Bugs …
1. ExpertSDR2 ends unexpectedly with no messages while trying to resize windows by dragging bounding-rectangle from lower-right corner. Repeatable - always fails.
2. Audio is garbled when running RX1, RX2 and BS. CPU usage is 2%. The garbled audio clears immediately when BS is turned off.

FYI, Here's the screen layout of the two 27" and one 24" monitors. My plan was to run ExpertSDR2 on the two side-by-side 27" monitors. And logging and other programs on the 24" monitor. The 24" monitor is on a monitor stand that makes it really easy to reposition it (including vertically).

I have watched this video a number of times. It was one of the deciding factors in my decision to go with SunSDR2 DX! I understand that your development priority needs to be with ExpertSDR3 and I cheer you and your development team on.

Is there any risk to my radio in running the pre-release of ESDR2 update 8? Any limitation on reverting back to update 7?
