Is there a way to play multiple mp3 files in EESDR2 for use in contesting?

Pretty sure it can be done with the SDC (Software Defined Connectors) add in program, sdc.qrz.ru/en/

SDC is really a nice program and can do many things
I think it is mentioned in the User Manual AddendumVersion 6.11

The UMA covers multiple .wav files for contesting in N1MM, the K9DUR Voice Keyer, etc. MP3 is dificult to transmit cleanly because the file consists of compressed audio.

I thought I saw a section in the more recent SDC hat allowed saving mp3 files and playing those back

Okay quick look at 15.04X64 client- MACRO tab it will allow playback of WAV files you can use to create SSB messages- USE in SSB and create you wav files then pint the popout panel to those AWAV files and label them- and select Macro TEXT/File Mode to SSB apply

I have not personally tried this yet but it appears that the option is there in SDC to do so.

There is Rick, but this is via TCI. It is no good if trying to work within contest software since it will not be part of the ESM QSOing procedure. I mean, you could do it separately but it would not be time efficient. The tried and tested method is within the contest software itself. The exception, which I chose to ignore since the program is not well adopted by USA ststions, is to use the SDC/TCI method via 5MContest which integrates fully. But I was trying to keep the answer simple and practical.

Yes 5M contest integrates fully and is really nice albeit missing a MUCH of US contests I do use it for my UE contests when available

But the SDC doesn't have to be connected to a contest logger in order for it to sends WAV file messages one could leave the pop up window in place alongside the other logger and it still work with TCI interfacing could it not?

The K9DUR option has been around for ever, back when he wrote that for the old Flex 1000/3000/5000 series: it works but at the same time is going to basically be the same as using the SDC interface- I personally would use the SDC over the K9 option since TCI is quicker.

It certainly would be nice if Scott N3FJP added the TCI option I have spoken with him a could times about this, perhaps I shall bring t up again, as that and N3FJP seems to be the big go to loggers here in US as well as logger 32

It would be cumbersome. In a contest you need ESM, enter sends message, and losing the contest screen focus to go to SDC just to send a macro that would be already on its way from the contest software is unrealistic. I maintain that the answer to the original question is found in the UMA.

For non-contest yes via TCI. I do not see how TCI is quicker than K9DUR, it is still a F key press, but TCI via SDC is better as it covers all modes and switches dynamically per the radio. In fact, in the next UMA edit, K9DUR will be removed as its had its day in the EE environment.
