Ciao Oreste,

I also bought one recently, and it is a great device with some limitations. I am using it alongside the SunSDR Ecoder, the Ecoder manipulates RX1 and the Shuttle Express manipulates RX2, but it all depends on how you want to set it up.

Shuttle Express is basically a keyboard. The buttons, the jog and shuttle knobs will emulate keypresses and/or mouse clicks. The main limitation is Windows itself, meaning that the program you want to control, more precisely the window which you want to handle has to have the focus. This means you cannot change the frequency or set a filter etc with the Shuttle Express while you are in the logging program for example. For this very reason I have dedicated a laptop to ExpertSDR and I am logging on another computer. In theory, you can use some windows macros software to make it better, but the ones that are good are like learning a new programming language...

I do not think I can write a full user manual on how to configure Shuttle Express, mainly because I myself am still just playing with it. In the next post I will give a quick outline of the necessary steps.

How I set up Contour Design's Shuttle Express to manipulate the Expert SDR 2 software with my SunSDR2Pro.

Main steps:

1) Install drivers and control software of the Contour device.

2) Decide what you really want to use this controller for, and how it should work. Play a bit with the device while not connected, try to imagine you are actually operating. What are the buttons would you use most frequently? Which VFO or which RX should the jog dial tune? What would you like the outer shuttle ring for?

3) Go to the Expert SDR software, then Options/Shortcuts. This is where you need to create keyboard shortcuts for the functions that you will later assign to the buttons and dials on your Contour device. Test that the keyboard shortcuts actually work the way you want it to work. (I found and actually reported a bug that VFO tuning on RX2 cannot be assigned a shortcut, so I on RX2 I canot tune the VFO, I can only move the frequency which is not that nice. I hope it will be fixed in the next update.)

4) Go to the Control Panel menu of the Shuttle Express software. There is a dropdown menu there, with pre-defined settings for a number of software, mainly video editing software. There also is a "Global settings" set, which is used mainly withing Windows itself, for example the jog dial is used like the mouse wheel, so you can scroll in the bowser, etc.
Press the OPTIONS buttons and from there you can create setings for a new program. (Create new settings). Once there, you have to select the program that you want to control wth the device, in our case, navigate to the folder where Expert SDR 2 is installed and choose its exe.

5) From here on the thing is quite intuitive I believe, you have select the button or dial knob you want to define, choose whether you want to assign a keyboard shortcut, a mouse action etc, tell it what it really is etc.

6) The trickiest to set is the jog, but especially the shuttle ring. The shuttle for example has 7 positions in each direction, and not only can you assign actions to the positions but also set what the ring should do when you are in transition between two positions, further, you can set what it does between positions when you are moving up or when you are moving down.... You can also set for each position whether you emulate one keypress or multiple, and if it is multiple, how fast it has to repeat it....
Experiment with this. What I did here is the further I pull the shuttle ring, the more quickly it will send the VFO A down/up keyboard shortcut, so in effect, if I turn it fully left, it will tune very fast, if I just move it slightly, it will just tune slowly. I have tried to make it even better by assigning shortcuts to half positions backward and upward which set the tuning steps up and down. It did work, but I wasn't 100% happy with the result, but I believe you can experiment with it a bit.

7) Don't forget to save your settings each time you change something, do it both in the ExpertSDR profile and in the Contour Device's control panel.

8) The software of Shuttle Express automatically recognises the program that has the focus, and if i is ExpertSDR, it will apply this profile automatically

9) You can have several sets of settings for the same software. I have for example set up shortcuts for both RX1 and RX2, shortcut sets for VFO A = VFO B, but you might want to have profiles based on the type of operation (contest, pileup handling, etc...) The interesting thing is that you can nominate a button on the Shuttle Express to change these profiles in rotation. I have for example assigned the middle button to swap between tuning VFO A and VFO B for example.

The above is by no means a manual, but I hope it takes you closer to setting it up yourself.

Good luck, and I will be curious how others have set it up, what buttons you use, etc.

In my setting, the leftmost and rightmost buttons zoom in and out, the jog tunes the VFO in fine steps, he outer ring move frequency in a coarse way, the middle button swaps profile to another one where the difference is whether the jog/shuttle manipulate VFO A or VFO B and the remaing two change filter width.

Hi All
I've seen some post's regarding the Shuttle Express and was wondering if you have it fully setup would it be possible for anyone who has done it to make a short video's on HOW you did it with explanations on the button's used on the Shuttle Express and how your short cut is connected to the Sunsdr programme ? to make them connect to each other. The video could then be posted on youtube.

Hi All
Roman or anyone else who might know is there a Windows keyboard short cut list for the Expertsdr software ??? I've had a look in the manual but I can't see anything there, so for instance Press SPACE BAR makes the software go in to TX or ALT and C changes the upper or lower cut of your audio ??

Rob

A keyboard short cut is user definable in Options>Shortcuts. It may not cover everything you want but is still comprehensive.

Hi,

is there in the meantime a file for the Shuttlexpress controller with the settings for the SunSDR2 Pro?
A video showing the programming of the Shuttlexpress and the setting in the SunSDR2 Pro would be of great help. I'm slowly desperate.

Hi Guys,

thank you for the tips. I've come a little further, but the operation of the SunSDR2Pro with the Shuttlexpress still doesn't work.

In order to be able to understand the individual work steps better, I describe my procedure in the following step by step.

I did the following steps:

1. Shuttlexpress:
Installation of the latest software v 2.13.3 on my laptop with Windows 10 Home 64 bit.

As a result, the Shuttlexpress works with the Opera browser. In my opinion, the installation of the Shuttle Express was also successful.

2. Shuttlexpress Icon:
I have now moved the shuttle icon to the taskbar.

And I checked whether the correct exe file was selected:
If I click on the icon I can now see the selected application Opera. That's okay too.

3. ExpertSDR2 shortcuts:
Then I entered the "Shortcuts" manually in ExpertSDR2 under "Options", as given by Erik, SM0JCA, as an example.

I then called up the shortcuts using the keyboard on my laptop. That works really well. The ExpertSDR2 software converts the entries correctly.

4. Application settings in Shuttlexpress software:
I have "imported" Erik's file (ExpertSDR2-file) for the Shuttlexpress controls into the Shuttlexpress software.
These are the same ones I entered as shortcuts in ExpertSDR2.

And then I selected the ExpertSDR2 application under "change target application" in the ExpertSDR2 program folder.

If I now click the Shuttlexpress icon in the taskbar, I can switch the target application, in my example between Opera and ExpertSDR2.

Everything seems fine up to this point.

Unfortunately, I still cannot control the ExpertSDR2 software from the Shuttlexpress.
When I operate the controls, nothing happens.

I ask myself the following questions:

- Have I selected the correct exe-file under "change target application"? I can't find another one either.

- Why was the Shuttlexpress software from contour installed on my laptop with a Windows driver from 2006? It should be in the latest software v. 2.13.3 a new driver included.

- In the "Contour Shuttle Device Configuration" I find the "Application setting" for ExpertSDR2, but in the application file on my laptop this file is not saved as a pref-file, but only the pref-files supplied by contour.

Any ideas?

Klaus-Peter

Maybe the ShuttleExpress is not communicating with ExprtSDR2 properly.
Check the USB comport settings to be the same.

Klaus-Peter, right-click the icon you use to open EpertSDR2 and look at the target .exe address and make sure it matches the Shuttle-Express target .exe.
